Dryer runs but won't heat: Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung

Safety first: unplug the dryer (and shut off the gas) before opening any panel.

Electric dryers

  • Thermal fuse blown, often because the vent is clogged. Replace the fuse and clean the vent, or it'll blow again.
  • Heating element open (test for continuity).
  • High-limit thermostat or cycling thermostat.
  • Only half the power: a tripped leg of the 240V double breaker lets the drum spin with no heat. Reset the breaker fully.

Gas dryers

  • Igniter doesn't glow, or glows but no flame: worn gas valve coils are classic on Whirlpool/Maytag.
  • Flame sensor or thermal fuse.

Check the vent

Disconnect the duct and run the dryer. If clothes dry much faster, your vent is the problem. Long or crushed foil ducts are common in older Birmingham homes. A vent cleaning is cheap compared to repeated fuse failures and fire risk.
